Jesse & Chayse had pretty ceremony on banks of the North Saskatchewan River. It was a gorgeously dramatic cloudy day at Sunridge Ski Area. Everything about this day as relaxed, fun and joyful.

Sunridge Ski Area sits on the east banks of the North Saskatewan River. Jessie’s parents have owned and operated the hill for several years. Not only is it a beautiful spot (with vast views of the river and Strathcona Science Park) but with it being personally significant, it was a perfect location for this couple’s autumn wedding day.

Wedding Reception at Sunrise Ski Area
The area itself is rich in history. It was once a major annual camp and hunting area for indigenous people as the bluffs in the river valley created perfect opportunities for bison hunting. A coal mine was open in 1911 and operated for over 40 years. In the 1970’s archeologic dig sites (some of the largest in Canada) revealed the rich history buried there. To avoid the surrounding industry encroaching on this land the province designated it a provincial park to preserve the important land and histories within. In the early 80’s the park, and ski area was originally developed on the site.
Minutes before the ceremony started the sky filled with dramatic clouds but no rain fell. The air was filled with reverence and joy. The reception began with the couple’s first dance and later emotional parent dances. The initial event allowed the couple to interact with all their guests through laughter storytelling and dancing. Those intimate moments are some of my favourites to capture. The laughter here, a firm hug there, and memories shared and retold among loved ones hold just as much of my camera’s attention as the “big” moments.
